I used to play Magic: The Gathering years ago, so when I saw this amazing concept art by Brad Rigney(aka Cryptcrawler), I thought it would be fun to model it.

Here is the realtime low-poly game model, which ended up being about 47K tris. I could’ve gone higher with the polycount if I was aiming for pure next-gen limits, but I figured why not just keep it efficient if I’m retopologizing everything anyways. This model was definitely a challenge, especially the hair…The “flame-on” version was something I just decided to do towards the end, mostly as an experiment. I had to come up with a way to render the fire in realtime, but I was pretty happy with how it turned out so I went through with it.

Rendered in Marmoset Toolbag 2 and textured with Substance Painter and Photoshop.
